Mahatma Gandhi's charkha, or spinning wheel, became a symbol of India's independence movement and self-reliance. Gandhi popularized the use of the charkha during India's struggle against British colonial rule. He encouraged Indians to spin their own cotton and weave their own clothes, promoting self-sufficiency and rejecting foreign-made goods, particularly British textiles.
